Candidate for the position of Environment Officer (PT)

Oscar Welchman

#ecowithoscar!

By July 2045, UEA aims to achieve net zero emissions.

You’ve seen me chair Democratic Procedures Committee, serve drinks behind the SU bar, in clubs and societies (from Yoga to Judo, Skate to Livewire…), and work as a Student Ambassador.

Now, I aim to combine Sustainability with Affordability: Net Zero with the Cost-of-Living Crisis, as your Environment officer!

My Goals if Voted as Environment Officer:

1:   To Introduce a Permanent Community Exchange Hub/ Charity Shop

  • A place on campus to exchange and acquire second hand items affordably and sustainably.
  • Could exchange books, textbooks, clothes, kitchen utensils electrical equipment, and more.

Possible Locations Include:

  • Upstairs of old Waterstones building (unused space between Hive and Library).
  • Old pharmacy building.

2.   To Increase Transparency Regarding UEA + SU Carbon Footprint

UEA aims for an 80% net zero campus by 2030 (against a 2015 baseline), and 100% net zero by 2045.

While UEA publishes its footprint data through HESA, it stopped publishing an annual sustainability report in 2017.

I want to bring more UEA emissions information to students, so we can understand what our greatest polluters are, and work with the university to achieve our net zero goals.

3.   To Introduce More Environmentally Friendly Products and UEA Merchandise

Eco-friendly UEA student merchandise could include:

  • Eco coffee/travel cups
  • Clothing
  • Stationary, and more

Other sustainable items could include:

  • Toiletries
  • Local produce
  • More affordable vegan meals
