Be Seen and Heard With Liz

Hey, my name is Liz, I’m in my second year of studying Molecular Biology and Genetics and I identify as a disabled student at the UEA.

As I am one of the current part-time officers at the SU, I have been involved with organising events for Liberation and Awareness Months including Disabilities History Month held in November and December. Therefore I’ve got ideas of how to plan and run events as well as making them accessible for everyone.

A disability affects 1 in 5 people in the UK, and 80% of those disabilities are invisible. However, people should be aware of the numerous hidden disabilities. To change this:

- I will encourage students who request diagnosis assessments and give them simple access to SpLD resources.

- I want to increase awareness of various invisible disabilities and how they affect daily life.

- I want to organise more inclusive activities all year long, and I'll make this year's Disability History Month truly memorable.

I intend to leverage my prior experience both inside and outside of the university to aim for change because I have been living with a hidden disability for many years and have witnessed the difficulties that come with it. Although our difficulties might not be apparent, we are still here and fight for change as a community.
