Student Action for Refugees (STAR)

We are a new society dedicated to supporting both local and national refugee communities through direct action, education, and campaigning.

Our main goals include:

• Organising regular off-campus volunteering sessions focused on English language support, in partnership with local organisations.
• Running awareness-raising campaigns to inform the student body about the realities faced by refugees and migrants.
• Campaigning for positive change, including writing to MPs and university leadership to advocate for more inclusive and supportive policies.
• Fundraising for local projects, such as New Routes’ Refugee Youth Hiking Scheme.

Our long-term ambitions include:

Launching a language support and gardening project on the university’s unused allotments, creating a welcoming space for integration and connection.

If we can get approval we would like to organise an off-campus volunteering trip to Calais, supporting refugees at the border by helping to meet their basic needs. This would be done in line with legal and ethical standards, with a clear focus on humanitarian aid - not facilitating border crossings.

We are committed to working closely with local organisations, leaving campus to provide practical support, while also fostering awareness within UEA through educational campaigns and pamphlets.

By combining direct action, education, and long-term projects, we aim to create a society that uplifts our community while giving students the tools to make a real impact.
