Creating a new society

If you have a new idea, passion or hobby that you think other students will love too, you can look to create your own Society. To do this you first need to find 20 other students who are interested, which you can do by proposing your new idea further down this page.

For more information on the next steps after this point, download our guidance document.

To either propose or vote on new society ideas, see below!

If you have any questions based upon the creation of new Societies, please contact our Activities Team on union.societies@uea.ac.uk or by coming in to see us in person at the SU Office upstairs in Union House!

What do you think of my idea for a new society?

AI for sustainability and Global Development

    Current
AI for Sustainability and Global Development is a student-led society committed to exploring how artificial intelligence can be used responsibly to address global environmental and development challenges. We aim to create an inclusive, interdisciplinary community where students from all backgrounds can engage with the opportunities and risks of emerging technologies in a supportive and accessible environment. A core part of our identity is acting as a bridge between societies whose work connects with our themes of sustainability, technology, international development, climate action, business, and social justice. Through collaborative events, shared projects, and cross-society dialogue, we bring together diverse perspectives to enrich understanding and encourage innovative, ethical approaches to global challenges. This collaborative spirit ensures that conversations about AI are not limited to one discipline but strengthened by the wider UEA community. We are committed to upholding the UEA Student Union Code of Conduct by fostering a respectful, safe, and welcoming environment for all members. Our activities include talks, workshops, debates, and skills-building sessions designed to empower students to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute positively to both local and global communities. The society strives to champion open dialogue, academic integrity, and responsible innovation as we work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
