uea(su) statement on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

uea(su) are saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96, at her family home in Balmoral. Queen Elizabeth II has been a beacon of stability and continuity for this country since her coronation in 1952, overseeing the terms of fifteen Prime Ministers during her seventy-year reign.

She leaves behind the extraordinary legacy of being Britain’s longest reigning monarch, a mother to four children, a grandmother to eight and a great grandmother to twelve. Our thoughts go out to all her family in what must be a very painful time and to everyone impacted by this huge loss. Our condolences especially go out to His Majesty King Charles III during this time of grief and our best wishes go out to him as he takes on the heavy responsibility as Head of State.

The true testament to her legacy is the love and affection felt across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world towards her. The impact she has had on global history is almost immeasurable. She has overseen the independence of forty-eight countries and five dominions as well as the growth of the commonwealth from a membership of eight in 1952 to fifty-four in the present day.

Being a resident of Norfolk and a supporter of the UEA community, the Queen played an important role in both the cultural and social fabric of the region. We know this news may affect our students far and wide and we encourage any members impacted by this event to reach out for support. If you are affected in any way and would like welfare support, please get in touch with the University Wellbeing Services and uea(su) Advice Centre.

Our deepest sympathies,

uea(su)
