Black Humanities Project

The Black Humanities Project began as a response to the murder of George Floyd in 2020, and is an entirely student-led initiative with students forming and running the project, supported by staff.
Over time, the project’s aims have changed and evolved. For most of its life, the focus has been on:

  • championing a more ethnically diverse curriculum
  • inspiring young, ethnically diverse students to consider studying arts and humanities at higher education

The Black Humanities project has now shifted its focus to the degree awarding gap, under the Ethnicity and Equity Ambassador scheme.

The degree awarding gap is a nationwide issue that refers to the gap in attainment of top grades (2:1 or above) between white students and Black, Asian and Minority ethnic students at university.

For 2021 graduates nationally, the gap stood at...

  • 8.8% - The gap between the percentage of white students and BAME students awarded a First or a 2:1 for their degree (2020/21).
  • 18.4% - The gap between the percentage of white students and Black students awarded a First or 2.1 in their degree (2020/21). At UEA this figure stands at 13.6% for 2024 grads
  • 9.5% - The gap between the percentage of white students and BAME students awarded a First in their degree (2020/21).
