uea(su) is a democratic membership organisation. What this means is that our members direct what we do. We are run by students for students. To allow this to happen, we have various structures and meetings in place to enable our members; students, to direct us. The highest democratic decision-making body at uea(su) is the UEA50, made up of fifty randomly-selected students each term.

    Trans rights vs the EHRC bathroom guidance

      The Sportspark has insisted on sticking to the transphobic EHRC guidance that would prevent transgender students from safely using the changing rooms that align with their gender. We ask the Student Union to show that the rights and safety of transgender people are more important to the student body than signalling allegiance in a culture war by pushing back against the Sportspark. This guidance has since been rescinded due to national backlash, so we see no reason as to why the Sportspark should continue to uphold it.

    Sportspark booking access for societies I believe that societies who would benefit from sportspark spaces should be able to book these rooms in the same way as we can the alternatives on campus. This is especially true with the dance/performance societies such as vouge and burlesque who would greatly benefit from accessing the dance studio - due to mirrors, floor type and space/member capacity. I do not think societies should pay for these spaces as access to a dance studio for these societies is as fundamental as access to a sink for art, or baking. I also believe that these societies are over capacity regarding space required for all members to engage, a better space should be provided for continuous growth.     NUS: In or Out? UEA(SU) should hold a referendum to decide if UEA(SU) remain members of the National Union of Students (NUS). Explainer The Student Union is a member of an organisation known as the National Union of Students (NUS). As with any democratic, representative body it is important that our members are willing and informed signatories of a national body that claims the legitimacy of our membership. It has been over five years since the last time our willing membership was reaffirmed, and it is a reasonable democratic standard to ask students if they wish to continue their association with NUS.     The SU to stand against the stocking of Nestle products at the shop We call on the Student Union to support the removal of Nestlé products from all shops and outlets on campus. This action aligns with our shared values of ethical consumption, corporate accountability, and social responsibility. UEA50 Passed 24/10/2025
    PTO Invisible Disabilities Officer Terminology UEA are already doing really well representing disabilities, being one of the few universities that have separate visible and non-visible disability positions. The term "non-visible disabilities" is recommended by DPTAC and the UK Government Disability Unit over "hidden" or "invisible" as the most neutral and accurate terminology. 'Invisible' can indicate the disability does not exist, and 'hidden' can indicate the disability is being deliberately concealed, implying it is something to be ashamed of. To make UEA more representative, updating the PTO invisible disability post name with different terminology may be an idea worth pursuing to bring UEA completely in line with the best disability practices. The only downside of this would be that non-visible may be slightly less familiar than invisible, but I believe clarity and inclusivity outweighs this. UEA50 Passed 24/10/2025
