To make a Stage One academic appeal, you must include two things: 

• A written statement demonstrating how your situation justifies one or more of the appeal grounds 
• Supporting evidence for your appeal, such as medical evidence, evidence from emails or supporting letters from friends or family 

We've created an easy way for you to access all of our information and student guides in one place. 

All you need to do is complete our enquiry form and select 'Stage One Academic Appeal' - finish submitting the form, and you'll receive an automatic email with loads of information, suggestions and links to our student guides. These include suggestions and templates for how to prepare and structure your appeal. 

When you are ready, you must complete the UEA Stage One Academic Appeals and Complaints online form and upload your statement and evidence.  

It's important to remember that you only have one opportunity to submit your academic appeal, and you will not be able to submit additional evidence or information later.

If you have received an email about being withdrawn and receiving an exit award (a Certificate or Diploma) you still have the right to appeal not being progressed to the next stage of your course, if you meet the grounds.

Exit awards are given when a student does not meet the criteria to continue studying for a BSc or BA, but has completed enough credits to receive a secondary award.

We know that a number of students may have been taken by surprise by the university's decision to withdraw them, based on the provisional results for their reassessments that was recently made available on Blackboard.

Our understanding is that provisional results do not reflect any penalties that would be applied to an assessment or reassessment, such as late submission penalties. The Students Union does not have access to student academic records, so  would encourage any student seeking more clarity on the reason for their withdrawal to contact the University through the Student Information Zone. 

If you have uploaded your reassessment document(s) to the wrong submision point and have been given a mark of zero - you can submit an academic appeal under the grounds of ECs. You must be ready to submit the document to the correct point, and do this as soon as possible. 

You will need to provide submission receipts of both submission to the wrong place before the deadline and submission to the correct place in your academic appeal evidence. 

You have 10 working days to submit an appeal from the date of your notification of withdrawal.

It can take up to 6 weeks for an academic appeal to be reviewed and processed by the University, particularly in cases where your appeal is related to procedural issues or dissatisfaction with teaching. 

In some situations, a successful appeal may result in another opportunity to complete a failed assessment - usually during the next available assessment period. The timing of this is determined by your School and the Academic Registry.

If your appeal is upheld, the current timeframe means it is unlikely that you will be able to resume your studies immediately - the University may require you to take a Break in Studies until you are able to return to your course. 

Understandably, this can impact other elements of student life, including student finance, accommodation and student visa eligibility. We strongly encourage students to access support from the teams in Student Journey and Support Services for financial concerns and student visas. 

If you are staying in UEA Accommodation, you will be contacted by their team about your accommodation license once you have been withdrawn. If you are staying in Private Accommodation, you may need to explore finding an alternative tenant if you decide not to stay in the accommodation for this coming year. We have some information about leaving a tenancy early.
