We offer appointments in person, via Teams and telephone, and by email. We’ll ask you what types of appointments you can attend, which gives us the flexibility to help you as soon as possible.

At busy times of year, we’ll offer email appointments as standard to make sure we can support as many students as possible.

If you email or visit the Students Union Welcome Desk in Union House (open Monday – Friday 10am – 4pm) to ask for an appointment, you’ll be asked to complete a request form first. We’re not doing this to be annoying, but to make sure we’ve got all the information needed to provide you with the most effective advice.

If we are not the right team to help with your query, we will let you know who to contact in the University.

Before you request an appointment, make sure you’ve checked out our information resources. We’ll prioritise the most complex or time-sensitive situations, and you might be able to find the answer you need on our website.

Why do you have to fill in an online form?

Whether you’re new to advice(su), or you’ve spoken to us before about a different situation, we ask that all students fill in a request form. It helps us get all the information we need to understand your circumstances and provide you with the right support. We’re also independent from the University, which means we don’t automatically have your permission to store your data on our Advice systems – the form will ask your consent to do this.

Staff referral

Whenever possible, we encourage students to speak to advice(su) directly so that we can provide the most timely and accurate information for their circumstances. If a student feels able to complete one of our booking request forms themselves, this is the quickest way for them to access the right support from our team.

However, we know there may be times when UEA staff or other uea(su) departments wish to refer a student to us for additional support.

Please email advicecentre@uea.ac.uk, copying in the student being referred, and include the following information:

  • student name
  • student number
  • the student's preferred email address for contact
  • an outline of the student's situation
  • an outline of advice or support you have given to the student
  • an outline of the support you are seeking on behalf of the student
  • any other information relevant to the circumstances

Please copy the student into the email as confirmation that they are aware of, and have consented to, the referral.

What to expect from us

We will send an email to the referring member of staff confirming receipt of their referral.

We will contact the student by their preferred email address to:

  • ask for more information about their circumstances to inform our advice
  • signpost them to the appropriate booking form to arrange an appointment with an advisor
  • share relevant resources and information guides

Unless requested by the student, we will not provide further updates to the referring member of staff about the support provided as a result of the referral.
