Addiction is often misunderstood as a matter of choice or willpower, yet decades of psychological and neuroscientific research reveal a far more complex picture. This talk explores the underlying psychology of addiction—how learning, reward pathways, trauma, social environments, and mental health interact to shape vulnerability and recovery. Moving beyond theory, it also examines the psychosocial interventions that make a real difference: from motivational interviewing and cognitive‑behavioural approaches to community‑based support, harm‑reduction models, and lived‑experience‑led services.
Hosted by the PsychSoc as part of our fundraiser for the Matthew Project (19th March), and aims to raise awareness, spark conversation, and support vital local services.
