One of the body's reactions to anxiety is muscle tension, resulting in tension, muscle aches and pains, and fatigue. Muscle relaxation can be particularly helpful in cases where anxiety is associated with muscle tension.
Muscle tension is commonly associated with stress, anxiety and fear as part of a process that helps our bodies prepare for potentially dangerous situations. Even though some of those situation may not actually be dangerous - our bodies still respond in the same way.
Sometimes we don't even realise how our muscles become tense, but perhaps you clench your teeth slightly so your jaw feels tight, or maybe you shoulders hunch over? Muscle tension can also be associated with headaches and backaches.
Progressive muscle relaxation is one method of reducing muscle tension that lots of people find really helpful.
It is a way of allowing yourself to relax, whilst training your body to respond differently to stress. And so we wanted to give you all the opportunity to learn more about it as a way of looking after yourself and decompressing.
