Who was James Moriarty?
He never appears in the flesh in Doyle’s novels. Ever the elusive figure, he exists only as a name, until meeting his demise at the legendary Reichenbach Falls with his nemesis, Sherlock Holmes. But what if he was never the villain we expect him to be?
London, 1879, and William James Moriarty is fighting to abolish the class system that infects London like the plague. With the help of his brothers, Albert and Louis, he schemes to become the Lord of Crime, terrifying London by staging the public deaths of noblemen. Every story needs a villain — for the sake of the country, that’s what he’ll become.
But Sherlock Holmes is on his trail. Similar to William in almost every way, will he ever deduce that the mathematician he took for a friend is also the man terrifying London?
Well, this week we’ll watch two episodes that don’t answer that question, but instead prove anime’s version of Sherlock and Moriarty to be far closer than any that came before. Perhaps they’ll even solve a crime together…
Come on down to NewSci 0.08, from 6:30 until late, for an evening of deduction and dangerously gay subtext as we watch Moriarty The Patriot, followed by a quiz.
