Event details

Sunday 23 October 2022, 3pm - 4pm

Blackdale 0.08

Please join BLDC for the 'Origins of Latin Dance' workshop! We will be educating you on the cultural origins of Latin dance, and then we will be taught a super fun 'Cha' and 'Jive' routine by the amazingly talented Marwa Ramsi!

This event will be completely free! Please come along and bring your friends- no previous dancing experience is required! We are hoping to make this event super fun, informative and to further educate our attendees on the origins of Latin dancing!

Please wear comfy clothes and shoes, and bring water!

To see more about this event, please see our instagram page @UEABLDC! Here is a snippet of the information we will be discussing:

  • Latin dancing has many cultural routes. It was a traditional dance for African, Mexican, Southern and Central American, and Caribbean individuals which dates back to the 15th century (Cashion, 2019).
  • The dances are linked to African drum beats; European + African slaves created the music with drums (Dance Poise, 2009).
  • Millions of Sub-Saharan Africans were shipped as slaves between the 16-19th centuries. Elements of African dance were fused into popular dances within Latin America. (Cashion, 2019).
  • In African derived communities, their dances were mechanisms for survival during times of brutality and racism. (Cashion, 2019).
