Creating Inclusive Opportunities for All

As a 3rd-year nursing student, I'm excited to run for the position of Activities and Opportunities Officer. Having served on various society committees over the past 3 years, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges students face in engaging with extracurricular activities, particularly amidst the pressures of placements and deadlines. It's evident that the current approach isn't working, and I'm determined to change that.

Financial Accessibility:

I recognise the financial barriers that some students face when participating in clubs and societies. I pledge to work closely with clubs to make participation more financially accessible for students from lower-income backgrounds. I will achieve this by talking to sports about what is included specifically within the costs of membership to see if any areas could afford to decrease costs.

Inclusivity in Sports:

I committed to reducing the stigma surrounding plus-size individuals, POC and those with disabilities participating in sports. I will strive to create an empowering environment where everyone feels welcome and supported, regardless of their size, race or ability.

Make UEA a Safe Space for Queer Individuals:

Norwich boasts a vibrant queer community, and UEASU must reflect this diversity and inclusivity. As Norwich has the third-highest queer community outside of London and the highest population of bisexual individuals nationally, I am determined to champion queer visibility and representation on campus. By leading bigger and better queer events throughout the year and actively seeking input from queer students. I hope to achieve this with LGBTQ+ (Trans & Non-Binary Place) Officer Nominee Thea Glover.

Academic Support and Collaboration:

Academic societies play a pivotal role in supporting students' academic endeavours. I will encourage these societies to host study cafes and collaborate with course representatives to provide academic support and foster a sense of belonging. By promoting collaboration and resource sharing, we can enhance the academic experience for all students.

Cultural Exchange and Appreciation:

Cultural societies enrich our campus community by celebrating diversity and promoting cross-cultural understanding. I will support these societies in platforming their culture through events like a multicultural week, showcasing music, food, and dress from different cultures in the hive.

Collaboration with Small and Local Businesses for Night Fairs:

I am passionate about fostering connections with our local community and creating vibrant campus events. I propose to work closely with small and local businesses to produce more night fairs within the hive.

Creating a Safer Campus Environment for Women+:

I want to challenge the concerning culture at UEA that leaves women feeling unsafe on campus, particularly during events like Sports Night. This involves raising awareness of resources such as the "Never Ok" campaign and Safer Taxi Schemes, lobbying for reform in the university's handling of sexual misconduct reports to ensure a survivor-centred approach, and establishing safe spaces like a women-led club night.

In closing, I thank you for considering me for your vote. Together, we can make meaningful changes that benefit all students and create a more inclusive campus environment. Thank you for considering me for the position of Activities and Opportunities Officer.
