Make every day a slay

Who am I?

I'm Matthew Shields, a second year Computer Science student, and my pronouns are He/They.

I'm currently the president of the pride society where I've organised weekly social events for members of the university’s LGBTQIA+ community to meet in a safe space as well as raising awareness for the community through flag marches around campus and regular social media posts!

What will I do for you?

Extend LGBT+ Awareness beyond pride month

Sometimes outside LGBT+ history month issues facing the community get forgotten around the university. Especially in the current state of our rights being under attack by politicians it's vital that we keep awareness up year-round and that the SU condemns the actions of our government.

No Queer Alone

I will ensure that regular events and socials are held for members of UEA's LGBTQIA+ community by pushing the SU and liaising with Pride Society to ensure that everyone has a safe space to turn to and meet other like-minded members of the community, especially in times like welcome week, where people may be feeling at their most isolated.

Make spectrum great again!

The only LGBTQ+ club night at UEA should be a safe space and opportunity for members of UEA's LGBTQ+ community to come together and have a queer night out, but we've been let down by insensitive themes, irregular dates and a lack of effort put into the event, this needs to change! I will ensure Spectrum becomes the highlight of the month.
