Transgender Awareness Week

Take part in Trans Awareness Week activities and help raise visibility and understanding on campus.

Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community.

Each year between November 13 – 19, people and organizations around the country participate in Transgender Awareness Week to help raise the visibility about transgender people and address issues members of the community face.

You can take part in Transgender Awareness Week in various ways, from organising or attending a vigil or march, to fund-raising for pro-trans charities. However you choose to participate in Transgender Awareness Week, be sure to tag @uea_su on Instagram.

Transgender Day of Remembrance - Thursday 20th November 2025

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honours the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence that year. TDOR was founded by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour her memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

2021 marked the most deadly year recorded with at least 375 transgender people killed by violent means. This number is likely under-reported, and doesn’t include non-fatal hate crime.

Here at the SU, we are proud advocates of trans rights and equal opportunities in all forms, making sure that people are at the centre of everything we do.

We will always use our voice to fight for equality at every opportunity, and we gladly welcome you to join us on that journey!
