Read the uea(su) Code of Conduct and what’s expected from all student members.
Students who register with UEA are automatically given a free membership to the Students Union uea(su). We have our own Code of Conduct and series of expectations about how our members behave in SU spaces and groups.
Find more information about our Code of Conduct and Complaints process at our webpage
The full Code of Conduct is our Bye-Law 12, found on our Constitution page.
In instances where a member, or group of members, is alleged to have behaved inappropriately or breached the Code of Conduct during SU activities, uea(su) can investigate this.
If behaviour is reported that does not directly relate to a member’s conduct during SU activities (for instance, they are part of a student group but the behaviour occurred outside of an SU-sanctioned group activity) it should be reported to UEA through their Report and Support platform.
The Code of Conduct process
When a complaint is received (through the online form) please link “online form” to this webpage found in the find support > make a complaint it will be reviewed and triaged.
If an informal action can be taken to resolve the issue – such as signposting to support services, or required training for members – uea(su) staff will work with students to do so.
If the alleged behaviour requires formal investigation, this will be referred to the appropriate level:
- Level One breaches are typically investigated by a Head of Department or Duty Manager.
- Level Two breaches, that are considered more serious by nature, will be investigated by a trained and impartial staff member appointed by the Supervising Trustee.
Investigations
Investigations are intended to establish the facts of a situation, review any evidence or mitigating information provided by any students involved, and obtain statements from any available witnesses.
At the start of an investigation, any reporting or responding students will be sent a letter outlining the nature of the complaint being investigated, as well as next steps.
Students who have been alleged to breach the Code of Conduct are encouraged to submit a written statement in response to the allegations. They will be notified of the deadline for this in the initial letter.
The investigator may deem it appropriate to meet with any or all of the students involved in the complaint.
Getting support
advice(su) can support you through the Code of Conduct process, helping you consider the facts of the case and any mitigating factors you would like the investigation to consider.
Our advisors do not have any involvement in the Code of Conduct process, and we are here to help you so please do get in contact.
There may be times when the Head of Advice and Welfare is required to undertake Code of Conduct investigations – we will take steps to manage any conflicts of interest and inform you of any recommended changes to advisor to ensure your comfort in accessing our support if this is the case.
